Is Microsoft Office Word and Open Office the same thing?

I'm trying to upload a fanfic onto www.fanfiction.net, but they don't support Microsoft Office, but they do support Open office.

No, they're hardly the same thing. MS Office is a Microsoft product that sells for real money; Open Office is a freeware product that's, well, free.

Many people around here tout Open Office as THE replacement for MS Office, and apparently able to read Word files, so I'm surprised that fanfiction site won't take Word files.

Fanfiction.net use to take Word files cause that's what I've used. Do you have the newer version of Word? If you do, when you save the file you might have to convert it to the older version by going to save as. You can try doing that.

If not than Open Office works just as well and the best part is that it's free.
