Work through the troubleshooting steps at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/Prob... . My guess would be a problem with your Normal.dot template (Word 2003 or earlier) or Normal.dotm template (Word 2007), or a problem with your printer driver. If your default printer in Windows is "none", then that can definitely cause Word to freeze... even if you don't have a printer connected to your computer, you should still install a printer driver for the printer that you usually print to, and make that printer the default in Windows.

Regarding Norton Antivirus, you may wish to turn off the Office Plugin that comes with it, but do not turn off Norton AutoProtect. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=32982... "How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in".
