Does Microsoft have any plans to relase a new Xbox in the near future? (2 1/2 - 3 1/2 years)?

When is Microsoft going to release a new Xbox product?

Generally speaking, from an R%26D (research and development) standpoint, there's always something new in the works. And when something is as far off as 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years, (at least in the game industry), the company won't say a word about it. So nobody except Microsoft knows for sure, and even then they're only beginning to make projections.

The Xbox 360 initially launched on November 22, 2005. Historically speaking, a game console lasts about five years before it is replaced with a new model. That would suggest a new Xbox may come out around November 2010... slightly less than 3 1/2 years from now. However, Microsoft has a shorter track record, having released the original Xbox in November 2001. That's only a four-year gap, and if they match that again, the next Xbox could launch as soon as November 2009... slightly less than 2 1/2 years from now.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the fact that high-end graphics are reaching a saturation point, and it's becoming harder to tell the difference between generations. Even though there's a big difference between Xbox 360 and say, Wii, that difference is inarguably minute compared to the generational leaps we saw in earlier consoles. So it is possible, even if not all that likely, that future new console releases may take longer to roll out.
