I make Microsoft excel sheets for others to use at the office, but some times people erase the formulas by mistake, how can i protect just some epecific cells from been modify, not the whole work sheet, cuz there is some info that need to be put in from others to work on regular basis.

Select the cells that you want people to be able to change. Go to Format, Cells. Select the security tab. Uncheck the locked box. Protect the workbook.

Now the unlocked cells can be changed and all other cells will be protected.

If you really need to work on something, go to http://www.openoffice.org/ and download openoffice for Mac. Install it. That will open, edit, save (in Microsoft format do file-export Microsoft), and print the documents you need. That is a temporary fix. If you really want to fix Microsoft Office, I'll need more information about the problem.

Don't keep your hopes up. I agree with Carl and Timmy. It cost too much to satisfy a few customers. If for example Halo 2 wasn't backwards comp. Basically, my computer desperately needs to be reformatted. Its a Sony Vaio, a few years old. I have no idea where the original XP disc is, but i have the serial number on the sticker that came with it which is attached to the bottom.

Unfortunately, to make matters worse, the CD-ROM functionality of the drive is no more, and it will only read DVDs, so even if I had the CD, it wouldn't do me any good.

So basically I'd like to know if microsoft sends out replacement copies of XP to registered users, and if so how much they would charge, and if it would be possible to request it on DVD.

Any help or any options I haven't thought of would really be appreciated! As far as I know I can't boot from USB, because this laptop is not that new.

I have never used Microsoft's replacement program, but I listed their link below. However, I am sure that XP installation disks do not come in a DVD-Rom version. Anyway, the CD should load from your DVD drive (as long as you have it selected as the boot drive).

Additionally, you could try the TechMedia company (under links). They sell replacement recovery disk sets, with the full operating system and all the original drivers for just about any PC. And, they are very reasonable.

I think it may be reading it as a date 3.68 = March 1968, which is about 24800 days since 1st January 1900.

Make sure the cell formatting specifies number and two or more digits and there is no formula changing that value.
Its a format Issue.

I tried running some format changes to see if I could replicate the change from 3.68 to 24800 , but nothing.

As near as I can figure a formula is being applied to that cell.

Just format it to what you want, or use formula painter to change the format from another cell to fix the problem cell

I can't stand Word or Excell. They are way too complicated and do too much for me. Usually, all I want to do is type a document. I don't want it to auto-anything! I'm also much faster typing a word than having it suggest words I've already typed earlier and pressing enter (or hitting backspace because it inputed a word instead of letting me go to the next line when I hit enter)!

I know I can turn the features off, but why do they start on? Shouldn't I choose the features I want to use before the program uses them?

You can turn that automatic stuff off, and I have it turned off on my PC because of the very reason you're complaining about. I find that all these applications have pieces that drive me crazy, but fortunately those features are the ones you can usually configure.

first, do not panic. Then do a search on your cornputer. If progs not their U may have to reinstall them.? Not likely event for anyone to accidentally remove an entire program. One has to know how to do that. If desktop icon was removed, the program is still loaded in the cornputer. Good luck.

YES. That is why many gamers have "dumped" it and gone back to 98SE. This is REALLY a problem if you have an Intell CPU. An AMD helps due the way it handles "floating point math". If you are only Web browsing rather than Internet surfing (alt's, bbs's, ftp's, news nets and use groups) then it isn't all that bad. Off line it just sucks.

Great big after thought cause I don't mean to mislead you. No on SP2 as re above, but again a big fat YES on XPhome as an operating system. MS knows it. That is why they will scrap it same as ME soon as they get LONGHORN , now Vista to work. Should be out this fall. The pro ver. is out now.
Service packs don't cause problems, they fix'em. In this case service pack 2 is installed for better security.
The first time that I tried to obtain SP-2, I tried downloading from Microsoft and it caused my computer to freeze or lock up. I was able to get it restarted and removed it from the computer via the control panel. Then I requested a disk from Microsoft for SP-2 and have found no problems with installation or using my machine since then. My recommendation is to get the disk from M/S and follow their instructions on installation and you should not have a problem.
It has some hardware compatibility problem,

but it is very rare. I installed SP2 on my desktop and laptop works just fine.

Sorry Vinh, there is no single-cell function that returns multiple values into a single cell. However, check your built-in help for database functions and you will see DMAX returns a single value from a database if it is a named range.

And when something is as far off as 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years, (at least in the game industry), the company won't say a word about it. So nobody except Microsoft knows for sure, and even then they're only beginning to make projections.

The Xbox 360 initially launched on November 22, 2005. Historically speaking, a game console lasts about five years before it is replaced with a new model. That would suggest a new Xbox may come out around November 2010... slightly less than 3 1/2 years from now. However, Microsoft has a shorter track record, having released the original Xbox in November 2001. That's only a four-year gap, and if they match that again, the next Xbox could launch as soon as November 2009... slightly less than 2 1/2 years from now.

That being said, no, Microsoft does not offer these on line...everyone and anyone could take and pass the test, thereby devaluing it.

The benefits? Having an MCSE proves that you know your shtt.

You DON'T need a four year course, and an MCSE alone will not get you a job.

i got my MCSE and MCSA in under 2 years and have not had 1 problem finding work. every business needs a tech. i did most of my learning inline and went at my own pace. there are several paths you can go with regards to certification on what O/S and there are several different exams to take.

As for when it comes to jobs.. it sort of like a thing you can use to brag about on your resume if it needs some sprucing up, but it doesn't really do anyhting other than that. You need a college education to get a good job.

Simply no. It's just like Mac OS X and Windows, there is plenty of room in the market for 2 or more handheld operating systems. There was rumour of the decline of Palm as they are bringing out a windows based treo but this is not as a replacement but an alternative to give consumers more choice. Many times Outlook Express will not work getting internet e-mails - like Yahoo unless you subscribe to their preferred accounts. If hotmail allows this, go to the hotmail site under mail options and it should give you what their server name is.... It's not just hotmail.com..... there will be a 'pop-server' type thing you plug into that in Outlook Express. First make sure it's not a 'paid' thing from hotmail. Not legally. Microsoft, for some reason, wants to make money selling them, and frowns on copying them. They call it piracy, and can sue you if they catch you doing it.

Beside that, I would not use any third-party site that claims to have free copies: They might just be slipping you a few unwanted extras that will take over your machine for their purposes.

Percentile is a useful one. You can use it to calculate the top 20 or bottom 20 percent for example.

Sounds like your Normal.dot (or Normal.dotx, with Word Vista (2007)) may be corrupt. Try this:

1.Close all copies of MS Word.

2.In Windows Explorer (My Computer) go to the directory

c:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

(Word Vista may use a different directory.)

3.The Normal.dot template should be in this directory. Change its name to Normal.dot.bak. (So if this doesn鈥檛 work, you can change it back.) If there is a file ~$Normal.dot (note the funny characters at the front), delete it.

4.Try Word again. It should find Normal.dot missing, recreate it, and, hopefully, give you back your functionality.

Next time choose the "send" for the unresponsive. Sometimes Microsoft will generate a report for that particular problem. If so, follow their advice.

My guess is that some of the WORD files have been corrupted and the program needs to be reinstalled.

You might do an error check for XP. That's a long shot possibility. My Computer, right click Disk C and choose "Properties." Go to error checking and click. You will have to restart the computer for the check to run. Takes a half-hour or so.

hmm for Windows right click on the document you want to read and open as should say Default and click notepad.
I suspect that the specific PC that you're using may not have the Microsoft Word program.

If it does have the program, I would do the following:

1. Right-click on the document icon that you're trying to open in MS Word.

2. Select Open with...

3. Choose program.

4. Scroll down and select the MS Word program.

5. Be sure to tick the check box that reads, "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

6. Click OK.

7. Done.

As a last resort, you could always go into the registry and take them out, but you need to get the step by step procedure from some one whose done it. I do it all the time for Excel, but I've never done it for anything else, so I don't know which file to go into. This is a VERY risky procedure if you don't know what you're deleting.

Normally if you cannot get past the splash screen the computer is having a problem with a device or driver. Do this:

Power up the computer

Start pressing the F8 key right away and press it every second until a boot menu pops up

I have an original, genuine version of Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003 on CD, which I've successfully installed on two Windows XP machines in the past. I now have a new Vista laptop and have tried installing MS Office (MS Office 2003 is supposed to be Vista-compatible), but I get the following error message every time I try:

followed by a suggestion that I insert the CD. But the CD is in the drive (my computer has been using the CD to get to this stage) - I've confirmed the correct location (E:\), I've tried reinserting the CD, I've tried rebooting and reinstalling, I've cleaned the CD and I've ensured that all available Microsoft updates have been installed, but all to no avail. Does anyone know what the problem is here? Thanks!

Perhaps it's the copyright infringement issue. It should be one CD for one computer. If you have another computer that needs the same software, you are supposed to purchase another CD. Microsoft is pretty strict about this lately. I think you should call mircrosoft and find out more about it.

Well, when I went to retrieve the file a few minutes later after I went to my next Study, it was not there. I could not find the document anywhere. first of all let me tell you this

unless some one deletes it - there is no way it can just disappear

so my speculation is - you don't know where you saved it

so there are many ways you can try retrieving it back

1. it could have saved either on desktop or on "my documents"

2. Try "searching" for the file

3. Open MS word it should be there on the recent files opened list under "FILE MENU"

A family member wanted a laptop restored to stock conditions--after backing up pertinent data, I proceeded with a quick format, OS + App reinstall... only to find out that important contact and calendar/scheduling information was not saved!!

Setup: same XP prof. OS, partitioning, programs (outlook 2003 in particular), (matching) account-name.

I've tried several recovery tools (Migo's recover lost data %26 recover my files). The latter is unique in that it pulls up both written and overwritten files, yet I've been able to discover 0 .wab/.pst files that should have been in the appdata/microsoft/outlook folder... I should have at least found overwritten files. Anyone have suggestions for recovering Outlook files after formatting?

If we start Outlook configuration from scratch, will any contact data be retrieved if they enter the email address they used previously?

In Outlook 2003 the files are stored in two files: Outlook.pst and archive.pst

Both are located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\

Local Settings\Application Data\

Microsoft\Outlook

If those files exist when you start your new installation of Outlook, then you should see all the emails, calendar, etc.

However, I have found I get more reliable results in Outlook finding the old data if I do it this way:

When I do a backup/restore I move the good .pst files (to the desktop, an external drive, anywhere out of the folder they are in) then start the new installation of Outlook and let it create a new blank .pst file, then copy the old one back into that folder.

If it has it's own uninstaller, it should be ok. Setup a "System Restore" point, as a safety measure, first and then use the program's (Works) uninstaller to uninstall it.

If you have a registry editor, run it, then defrag and all should be well.

You enabled the Show/Hide Paragraph Marks and formating.

Press Ctrl+Shift+8 to disable it.

This mainly happens if you don't have an unicode font of the mail's language installed, it may also happen if you don't have support for showing complex script, enable it from control panel%26gt;Regional and language settings.......
Actually I'm surprised that Microsoft Outlook has not asked you about this about not being able to display other characters!

Anyway, if your using XP this is easy to sort out. Go to Control Panel %26gt; Regional %26 Languages %26gt; Languages.

In the Supplimentry Language Support. You will see that it includes tick boxes for Far Eastern Languages including left and right written formats. Tick what you want %26gt; Apply %26gt; OK.

It should then ask you for the XP Installation Disc. Follow the normal instructions plus it will probably ask you to reboot.

The best way to do this is to save it to an external device such as a thumb drive or disk. If those methods aren't available, you can lock your entire windows account with a password and be sure you log out. You can also go into the folder where the document is saved, right click on the icon, and go into the properties. Check the box that says hidden in the general tab. This will hide the document when someone else is browsing the folder.
