I bought a secondhand computer, and the software seems not to work in soem ways. I can not log onto Hotmail com and the comp will not update any Microsoft updates, could i have an illegal copy and if so what do i do

What operating system are you running? Win98, Win2000, Win XP or Vista?
You may want to reinstall the O/S because this is caused by a faulty installation.
Verify it with Microsoft.com, they have a program that will identify it legit.
Some operating systems, like 98SE, don't do updates anymore, Microsoft stopped supporting. What O.S. do you have?
get Genuine microshit Winblows.
reformat your computer and install Winblows
goto microsoft help and find and run the " validation" tool that they have if your copy is pirate you will know right then you will also be provided with a link to solve this prob.
